Anti-Aging and Health Benefits of Natural Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin has rapidly established itself as a contender for the next must-have health supplement, with multiple recent clinical trials indicating its effectiveness in slowing down the signs of aging and supporting health maintenance. Eyesight

Another study, highlighted in the Japanese Journal Medical Consultation & New Remedies, gave a daily dose of 6mg to 22 middle-aged and older people showing symptoms of presbyopia - a condition which causes the lens of the eye to lose the ability to focus (known as 'accommodation'). This makes short range vision hard.

The results showed a notable improvement in eye accommodation ability after astaxanthin supplementation over a 4 week term (Med Consult N Rem, 2009; 46: 89-93).

A separate study in Italy lasting a year that taking 4mg of astaxanthin daily alongside other carotenoids and antioxidants (180 mg of vitamin C, 30 mg of vitamin E, 22.5 mg of zinc, 1 mg of copper, 10 mg of lutein and 1 mg of zeaxanthin) resulted in better eyesight for patients with age-related macular degeneration (Ophthalmology, 2008; 115: 324-33.e2).

Skin Ageing and Wrinkles

Multiple research reports have shown that astaxanthin provides a natural barrier against the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, the number one reason for premature skin ageing. Another study reached the conclusion that astaxanthin may help fight against skin sagging and wrinkling (J Dermatol Sci, 2010; 58: 136-42).

More interestingly, clinical trials indicate that using astaxanthin can improve the overall condition and health of your skin. In a double-blind study, 16 women suffering from dried skin, aged around 40 years, were given either a placebo or a mix of 2mg of astaxanthin and 40 mg of tocotrienol (vitamin E). After just 2 weeks, the group who used the astaxanthin showed a number of improvements in their skin's condition, most notably less wrinkles, improved moisture and elasticity, a smoother surface, and less under-eye darkness and flabbiness. After 4 weeks the results improved further still, with various skin measurements providing a statistically significant change compared with the control group (Food Style 21, 2002; 6: 112-7).

Most recently a study with a bigger sample of women (49) tested the effects of astaxanthin alone in a 4mg daily dose. After just six weeks significant improvements were showing in the astaxanthin group in comparison to the control group using a placebo (Carotenoid Sci, 2006; 10: 91-5).

Getting Your Daily Fix

A standard and recommended daily dose for astaxanthin is 2-4 mg/day. As it is fat-soluble it is absorbed by the body most efficiently when taken with a fat-containing meal (Biosci Biotechnol Biochem, 2009; 73: 1928-32). In general terms it will go down best a dietary source of healthy fats, such as olive or flaxseed oil.

To date no side effects have been recorded after using astaxanthin meaning it has a high safety profile. A human safety study concluded that 6 mg/day of astaxanthin extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis is safe for healthy adults (J Med Food, 2003; 6: 51-6).

Although astaxanthin is a relative newcomer to the health and nutrition market the early indications suggest this algae based super-antioxidant could become a superstar of the supplement world. It's a bit like investing. If you can begin putting aside a given amount of money on a regular schedule in your 20's, you will have a lot more money in your 60's than the person who did not begin putting aside the same amount until their 40's.

Even so, when it comes to health and longevity, beginning late in life is better than not beginning at all.

So, what decisions should you make?

Nutrition: Do not diet. Avoid sugar, products containing sugar, and foods containing empty carbs. Eat foods high in fiber. Keep an eye on calories. Make sure you have good sources of protein in your diet.

Go to the library or book store and learn a bit about the glycemic index.

Exercise: Don't over do. Especially as you age, it becomes easier to injure yourself or just plain get fed up if you try to do too much too soon. While your goal is about 30 minutes of physical activity just about every day, you don't have to do all of that at first. Build up to it. Find different activities that help you get the amount of activity you need. Find at least a few that you really enjoy doing.

Supplements: Really, the only supplement you should need will be a daily multivitamin. While experts will tell you that you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from a well-balanced diet, how many people do you know who actually eat that way. Also, as we age, our bodies find it harder to access and use the nutrients available in the food we eat, and, for various reasons, we tend to get a little sloppy in our eating habits and schedules.

Sleep: The old recommendation of eight hours a night has been proven a good one by recent research. As we age, sleep gets broken up and we may need a little extra sack time.

Friends and Family: Stay connected. Many people who end up in poor health or sitting in a rocking chair in the corner muttering to themselves get there just because they are not linked up to enough people. Connections keep us in the real world.

Stay Mentally Active: Mental activity is just about as important as an anti-aging strategy as physical activity. Challenging your brain with puzzles is just one way to keep it "young". Learning new skills are an excellent way to keep the brain cells firing on all, or at least most, cylinders. Take a trip. It has been shown that visiting new places, experiencing new customs and activities, learning new languages, and even reading the map can help the brain resist the aging process.

Those are just a few anti-aging decisions you can make. There are many more, more than can be covered in a short article like this one. Go do some research on your own... even that will help keep your brain and body younger.

Anti-Aging Nutrition For Beautiful Radiant Skin

There are so many ways to eat healthy. Seems like the proponents of each believe their way is the only way, but that is not so. In my opinion it's a little like religion... there is more than one way, it is just a matter of deciding which is best for you. That is it, I am not stupid and will not go into my religious beliefs here. That being said, to us women, our diets are like a religion in some ways, right ladies? We try to make the right choices, we try to do the right things, we fight temptations, we feel guilty when temptations wins. You get my point. Makes me think of how much more simple things were back in the cave man days. There were no standards of how we should look, people were just people, in all shapes and sizes, even back then. Am I off on a tangent? Sorry.

In investigating all the different ways we can eat a healthy diet, be healthier, and look younger I have settled on the common sense diet. Raw food diet is a bit extreme, low carb is not realistic, I know I did it for 2 years, low fat all the time is difficult at best, no sugar or white flour, or refined foods is equally hard to stick to. What I try to do, and am usually very successful in doing, is adding as much raw foods as I can... along with some of the other foods. My favorite is spinach! Just an FYI.

So why is it good to add more raw foods to our diets? Great question. Well, there is certainly enough scientific research to support that raw food does us good. A recent study showed that following a raw food diet along with low fat lean meats, which include things like veggies, berries, seeds, chicken - resulted in lowered blood pressure, lower blood sugar in just a 3 week period.

When you cook veggies you destroy much of antioxidant value of the food. Food can lose up to 97% of the water soluble Vitamins B & C, and up to 40% of fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. These are all key antioxidants for anti-aging and good health.

Cooking also alters the proteins in food, so much that it becomes difficult to digest. Frying is the worst, do not fry your food, that is another article all together, just do not do it. Frying causes oxidization leading to the production of damaging free radicals.

Enzymes, a very important part of a healthy diet are completely destroyed when food is heated above 118 degrees. Enzymes are vital to cell renewal, a key in anti-aging skin care.

I am not saying you should eat all raw, however, like most people there is probably a lot of room for improvement. A simple way I add raw food to my diet is by using fresh spinach and apples in my sandwiches, or adding fresh spinach to my eggs after they are cooked, add berries to salads and cereals, add one salad a day consisting of fresh raw fruits and veggies, eat more guacamole, fresh salsa and dip cucumber slices instead of chips. Simply adding one raw food to every meal will make a big difference. The more you do it, the more you like it.
